Heritage Time Capsule created for U.S. Capitol Historical Society in commemoration of Lincoln’s birth

WASHINGTON D.C. (May 13, 2009) – The United States Capitol Historical Society and 111th U.S. Congress is commemorating the 200th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s birth this year with the installation of a custom designed Heritage Time Capsule.
Heritage Time Capsule was chosen to create the Lincoln Capsule, which will be stored at the Library of Congress until it is opened in 50 years, on the 250th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth.
The Lincoln Capsule, which honors the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth, was on display during the New Members of Congress Reception held on May 13, 2009 by the United States Capitol Historical Society to recognize the new members of the 111th Congress.
Heritage Time Capsule was honored to have Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, participate in the Lincoln Capsule’s dedication ceremony during the reception.
The United States Capitol Historical Society turned to Heritage Time Capsule in order to custom design the special time capsule, which holds reflections on Lincoln from members of Congress as well as thoughts from many U.S. citizens. These ruminations were transferred onto special acid-free paper to guarantee submissions remain immaculate until the capsule is opened in 2059.
The Lincoln Capsule is a Medium Composite Rectangle Heritage Time Capsule with Custom Graphics of Abraham Lincoln and the American flag.
Lincoln represented the state of Illinois as a member of the U.S. Congress from 1847-1849 and was President from 1861 to 1865. The United States Capitol Historical Society is a private, non-partisan, non-profit educational organization charged with educating the public on the heritage of the Capitol building and the U.S. Congress.
