Residents near Dana Point, California are poised to crack open their 50 year old time capsule Monday, breaking through what could be one of the heaviest time capsule tombs around. Back on August 29, 1966, folks gathered on Doheny State Beach to dedicate the time capsule to the start of construction of Dana Point Harbor.  An 8 ton granite rock was selected from those rocks forming the breakwater, but also for its flat surface so it could easily support the time capsule plaque. Inside the hollowed-out opening of the rock, organizers placed a four foot stainless steel cylinder filled with items that were extracted earlier this summer and prepared for exhibit next week.
The Dana Point Historical Society provided pictures of local beauty queens setting the time capsule inside the rock 50 years ago, and invites anyone who was at the original ceremony to come to Monday's event with any personal collections to share.
Dana Point Harbor, named after Richard Henry Dana, Jr., is located in Southern Orange County California, between Los Angeles and San Diego.  Dana, a lawyer who defended seamen, slaves and freedmen was also an author in the mid 1800's. He wrote of the place that would later bear his name that it was "the only romantic spot on the coast." The man-made harbor is now a popular shopping, dining, fishing, boating and surfing spot.  The time capsule unveiling ceremony will begin at 4 pm August, 29th at Dana Point Harbor's Baby Beach with a barbeque to follow, just as organizers had done years ago at the rock dedication ceremony.
