Slippery Rock University celebrated its 125th anniversary by preparing a time capsule for opening in 2039. According to SRU newspaper website OnlineRocket.com, SRU President, Cheryl Norton says they had a good time preparing for the December 4th ceremony. She told the crowd, "We had fun, we lived through memorable events and created new memories and traditions." Organizers filled the vessel, provided by Heritage Time Capsules, with a letter to the future president of the university, a snow globe celebrating the anniversary and a booklet detailing the principals and presidents of the university through the years. A DVD of 125 things students love about Slippery Rock, a football t-shirt, sports patches and even a foam finger was added. Several school departments and the SRU Alumni Association supplied items representative of their group.
Slippery Rock State Normal College opened in 1889 in Slippery Rock, PA to provide access to higher learning in the area. It became a teachers college in 1927, a state college in 1960 and then SRU in 1983. Norton says 'It seems miraculous that in a remarkably short period of time, only 18 months, the citizens of Slippery Rock had appointed the land, the record buildings, and administrative faculty that laid the foundation upon which Slippery Rock University is built."
